Hiding Patio
Once again a designer is determined to make use of every square inch of available space in our ever shrinking world. Intended as a practical solution to cramped apartment living, designer Sandy Lam created the “Spaceless” hide-away patio furniture set. Have some unexpected friends? Don’t fumble around in your cramped closet for those folding chairs, just reach down and pull up a seat…literally. While you are at it, why not pull up a picnic table and really get your pod party going? (Full Story at yanko)
I like it.

Tied Up
I've been all tied up the past couple of days. Sorry, that I didn't get a chance to get on here and let you folks know that I was going to be absent. Yes, I have been forgetting the parting picture as of late. I assure you it is here to stay; I just have to stop forgetting. I plan on giving you several parting pictures today to try and make amends.

Boy Doesn't Sleep For Three Years
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- A 3-year-old Florida boy who has not slept for three years because of a rare brain condition finally fell asleep after experimental surgery, doctors said.
Rhett Lamb of St. Petersburg was diagnosed with a condition called chiari malformation that puts pressure on his brain stem.
Rhett has never taken a nap or gone to sleep at night, forcing his parents to keep watch day and night."It is hell," father David Lamb said. "It has taken a toll on me and my wife and our relationship.""(My husband) has the day shift and I kind of have the afternoon shift," mother Shannon Lamb said. "We share the night shift because no one can sleep in the house when he is up anyway."During an experimental surgery, doctors removed pieces of bone from Rhett's skull and spine to take the pressure off his brain stem. The surgery appears to have worked."Last night, we didn't wake up," Lamb said. "It was amazing." (Full Story at local6)
As a parent, I can't even imagine what that would have been like.
Changed to The Same Thing
On October 5, 2007 Kristin Lucas succeeded in legally changing her name from Kristin Sue Lucas to Kristin Sue Lucas.
In Alameda County Court, the presiding judge who granted the request said: “So you have changed your name to exactly what it was before in the spirit of refreshing yourself as though you were a web page.”
The artist receives a government-issued refresh. Documentation includes a certified name change form, newspaper clipping, sketches from court hearings, and a transcript of a philosophical debate between the artist and the presiding judge over the perception of change. (Art and Story at 169.pair)
Comcast Racing
Witnesses claim a horrible accident over the weekend could have been prevented if two cable-company vehicles weren't driving recklessly. The police report says that the speed of the Comcast driver contributed to an accident that left a three-year-old girl seriously injured. I've been in contact with the family and they are very upset and won't leave her side. They're holding onto hope that she'll regain consciousness. . . Witness Wesley Hadley says, "I said a prayer right there. I didn't know what else to do." Hadley saw the accident happen as he was traveling south on Memorial Parkway. Near Sam's Club and Lowe's, he says, "Two Comcast vans passed me... I estimate, probably about 75 miles per hour." In a 50 mile-per-hour zone. Hadley says one continued straight and another tried to turn right near O'reilly Auto Parts. "I knew he wasn't going to make it." (Full Story at waff)
Anything I say just won't do this one justice.
LED Grow Lights
A 33 watt grow light made from 19 blue and red LEDs. Each LED is glued onto a broiler pan which acts as a heat sync. This light should be excellent for growing many forms of plants and algae. It cost me about $113 in parts and shipping to make this unit. I estimate this light to be equivalent to a 300W HID/HPS grow light.
Special thanks to Green Pine Lane for sharing the original concept of a "cookie sheet" LED grow light. (Full Story at screwdecaf)

I've always heard that cops look for energy bill spikes in order to find big growing operations. Well, it looks like you might be able to circumvent that little problem with these lights. Not that I'm endorsing legal activity. I would, however, be interesting in growing fresh herbs at the house. Now I just need to find the space. . .
Gastification
The Cafe Racer is a 1975 GMC pickup that essentially burns up used coffee to create a combustible gas. The gas is filtered on its way to the engine and, Viola, a caffeine-powered truck.
It’s interesting to note that this and the last vehicle mentioned are promoting a specific fuel (wood and coffee grounds), since the onboard wood gas generators can gasify almost any type of combustible material.
Gastification is a non-selective method using heat and a controlled amount of oxygen to convert biomass into a flammable vapor. In addition to Coffee Grounds, the Cafe Racer could use wood chips, old tires, and municipal trash, almost anything—which, by the way, is the same technology Coskata is using to make cellulosic ethanol out of garbage. And you thought this was going to be a post about having beans for dinner. . . This is actually pretty cool stuff, you should check out the link. It reminds me of "Back to The Future." Remember how they would just throw trash into the car/time machine?

Star Wars Wedding
Window cleaner Bramwell Brightey, 33, dressed as Han Solo and his girlfriend Tamsyn Lofts, 29, wore a Princess Leia outfit.
The pair, who have seen the film more 500 times each, said they opted for their surreal nuptials because church weddings bored them.
They had intended to have their wedding the Sunday before last so their invites would read "May the 4th Be With You", but because of date clashes for some guests they plumped for this weekend instead. (Full Story at telegraph)

Fizz Cup!
Slurping down ice cream mixed with fizzy soda has got to be one of life's greatest pleasures. In terms of quintessential summer pastimes it's right up there with lolloping in the sun, splashing about in a paddling pool and driving your '58 Chevy to the drive-in. Or is it just us that finds ice cream sodas incredibly '50s?
We digress. The point is, ice cream sodas rock. Unfortunately making one can be a bit messy, especially if you're out and about. Enter (accompanied by a crackly burst of Ramalamadingdong) the ingenious Fizz Cup. This take-anywhere plastic gizmo lets you make delicious ice cream sodas in seconds - no visit to the soda stand required. (More at fizzcup)
You know, just to go along with that fry holder.

What happens when a guy in the early 70's tries to jump over the St. Louis river into Canada? Watch and learn friends. Watch and learn.
Free Rice
Maybe you have heard that rice prices have gone through the roof lately. With so many poor people in third world countries that depend on rice as a staple, it's becoming quite the problem. You can always donate to charities that will provide for those folks, and that's a very good thing. You can also improve your vocabulary with this game, and with every correct answer you're donating 20 grains of rice. . . Basically it's a good way to feel better about procrastinating.
Sick Day
ARLINGTON, Wash. -- A former Washington state social worker has been accused of faking brain cancer to avoid work.
Theft charges were filed Tuesday against 40-year-old Sandra Dee Martinez, formerly of Mountlake Terrace, who was employed by the Department of Social and Health Services in Arlington.
According to investigators, Martinez presented fake letters that appeared to be from doctors saying she had malignant brain tumors. Prosecutors wrote that she received $21,000 worth of paid leave and took advantage of sick days donated by co-workers last year. . .
Arlington Police Chief John Gray said Martinez has moved to another state and won't speak with investigators. (Full Story at kmotv)

Girl Scout Cookies
DETROIT (AP) - A Girl Scout sold 17,328 boxes of the group's signature cookies this year by setting up shop on a street corner, shattering her troop's old mark and probably setting a national record. Jennifer Sharpe, a 15-year-old from Dearborn, plans to travel to Europe with her troop with the proceeds from her feat. "It's always been one of those goals I wanted to accomplish," Sharpe said Wednesday. (Full Story at wtop)
If my kid was selling that many, I would ditch the Girl Scout cookies and come up with something she could keep the profit from.
Shuttle Defense
Each time the space shuttle rises from its launchpad at Cape Canaveral, Fla., an Air Force officer waits anxiously for the first 2 minutes to pass safely. If the spaceship were to veer off course and endanger a populated area, this range safety officer would bear the terrible responsibility of flipping a pair of switches under a stenciled panel reading “Flight Termination.” The first switch arms explosives on the shuttle’s two solid rocket boosters. Flipping the second switch would detonate them, destroying the shuttle and crew. (Full Story at popularmechanics)
